Math Puzzles for Kids - Shape Puzzles
The following puzzles involve solving problems by counting or drawing shapes.
Some puzzles on the page has been created for different ability levels within second grade, with the easier puzzles always coming first in each section.
Each math puzzle comes complete with its own answer sheet.
Using the sheets in this section will help your child to:
Count the Rectangles Puzzle
This is a straightforward puzzle which involves counting the number of rectangles on two rectilinear shapes.
It is a good activity for develop careful recording skills, as there can be rectangles within rectangles.
The puzzle also reinforces the fact that a square is also a member of the rectangle family.
Count the Triangles Puzzle
This is a straightforward puzzle which involves counting the number of triangles on two different triangular shapes.
It is a good activity for develop careful recording skills, as there can be triangles within triangles.
Rectangle Up Puzzle
This puzzle is an easier version of the Square Up Puzzle.
It involves drawing as many rectangles as possible on a square grid with 9 dots.
It is a great puzzle for developing systematic working and getting children to look at shapes in different ways.
Square Up Puzzle
This puzzle is a harder version of the Rectangle Up Puzzle.
It involves drawing as many squares as possible on a square grid with 16 dots.
It is a great puzzle for developing systematic working and getting children to look at shapes in different ways.
This puzzle is accessible for all children in grade 2, though not many will be able to find all the solutions without help!
Pattern Blocks Puzzles
These math puzzles for kids have been designed to get children to try to work out how to make a shape from pattern blocks with only an outline guide.
It is a bit like a geometry jigsaw with no picture to guide you!
Some children may surprise you with this activity and perform much better (or much worse) than you expect!
There are 3 different puzzles available - the puzzles are all at a fairly similar level of difficulty.
Each pattern block puzzle comes with its own resource sheet to make the puzzle - though you will need scissors to cut them out!

Addition and Subtraction Puzzles
The puzzles in this section mainly focus on adding and subtracting numbers.
The puzzles start with adding and subtracting to 20, and progress on to harder levels and more complex puzzles.
